"Why did you rate me a 3? I think I deserve a 4!" There is probably no discussion a manager and subordinate can have that is less productive. The subordinate is upset because he feels the rating is inappropriate; the manager is frustrated because she is confined to a fixed number of rating values.

Flexible Evaluation Capability

The GroteApproachSM system solves the problem through the Slider Bar AssessmentSM tool which provides a continuum of rating values rather than a limited number of fixed rating points.

Using a mouse, the rater simply moves a pointer along the rating scale bar to select the precise rating he would like to give. Ratings can be given at the fixed rating levels or between levels to indicate exactly where performance fell for the respective item.

The value of the Slider Bar Assessment tool is particularly noticeable when the employee and the manager sit down to discuss performance in the review meeting. In preparation for the meeting, the employee completes a self-appraisal, using the Slider Bar Assessment tool on each component of the appraisal form. The manager does the same in the process of creating the official appraisal.

When the final GroteApproach appraisal form is viewed or printed for the meeting, the employee's self-assessment rating is conveniently displayed adjacent to the manager's rating for each item being assessed. The result is a productive and open discussion about the relative differences between the manager's assessment of the employee's performance and the individual's own perceptions.
